A Vision of Services and Virtualisation in the Internet by 2020
From FutureInternetWiki
Contents |
[edit] Introduction
This is an analysis of the current content of the v1 of the Roadmap relating to the services and cloud community, created by extracting and relating together relevant textual content of the document.
Key questions on the currently listed challenges and research priorities:
- are there missing big challenges for the Future Internet vision with respect to services & the cloud? Do they raise new research priorities for the next workprogramme?
- for those mentioned, are there other research priorities for meeting those challenges?
- what new or changed challenges and research priorities arise when addressing solutions for services and the cloud at Future Internet levels of scale, reach, security, stability and evolvability?
Additions and corrections can be contributed via email to SOFI (lyndon.nixon AT sti2.org) or directly in the wiki ('how to access & contribute'); these will be integrated and provided to v2 of the Roadmap document.
Missing big challenges in the document can be submitted to the Roadmapping group ([[1]]) by 30 September, selected new challenges will be presented at FIA Poznan and the contributor of the most interesting new challenge will win a laptop as a prize!
[edit] Expected context of research in the next work programme (Horizon 2020)
"The economy of Internet services will have developed ... notably through contextualised services on smart devices"... "the necessary transformation of business into innovative virtual enterprises"... "Future Internet services will be fully inclusive and accessible to everyone"... "we rely on increased capacity, reliability, and quality of services".
Key changes in the Internet landscape
- Everything as a Service (XaaS)
- Citizens as service prosumers
- Trust as a fundamental factor in services
- Digital cities augmented by online on-demand services
- Services as mediators between real and virtual activities
- Smart applications over data and services
- "the Internet as the cloud", a hosting environment for services that integrates computing, storage and networking, with an increased focus on the 'utility' model
[edit] Big Challenges for the Future Internet vision
[edit] Enterprise becomes a virtual Cloud.
"Growth of standard (though flexible) business services largely available, easily accessible and flexibly usable on the Internet" ... "services... identify and assemble competencies and the necessary resource capacities to exploit an opportunity" ... "Future Internet services will support operationally very complex and volatile, distributed development and manufacturing virtual organisations" ... "Future Internet services must be able to adapt to provide new Internet based working environments at minimal effort cost" ... "New economic and business models such as having the service provider pay rather than the user, or collaborative/co-operative services"... "incentives in service provision"
[edit] Shifting legacy systems (basically all existing software) into the Cloud
... needing to be evolved and adopted according to a model driven approach in order to be executed as a service. "Interoperability and pervasiveness of services remains a key challenge" ... "there is a need for new metrics to assess costs, risks, values and dependability of software based services"... "software engineering for web applications needs to be further developed" ... "necessary to bootstrap the Internet of Services by populating it with a critical mass of services"
[edit] New Global Service Delivery Infrastructures
... to cope with services and data growth and with the diversity of software and hardware platforms in an economic and dependable way, e.g. optimised for virtualisation. We need a user-focused, self-adapting service landscape with innovative new programming models for composite systems and for distributed secure data cloud applications. It should be possible to make choices about services based on a sound understanding of security and risk: there will be good tools and other support to understand security and privacy implications of services ... "Building composite services, how to quantify and control information sharing in service composition, risk reduction capabilities when recruiting services for compositions, secure dynamic creation/adaptation of services, and developing a new notion of security testing for services"
[edit] Research priorities for building the Future Internet
[edit] 1. Beyond converged infrastructure
- (a) Research needs to develop infrastructures to meet a vastly increased demand for services, blurring the boundaries between networks, storage, virtualised computing, service platforms and the infrastructure services layer.
- (b) Research needs to expand the cloud to the edges of the network and beyond, providing the execution environments for new FI applications and services, capable of real time processing and handling strong variability in demand.
[edit] 2. Networked data
- (a) Research is needed on new architectures and systems that underpin data driven services in the Future Internet
[edit] 6. Internet style innovation
- (a) Research on making cities into experimental service environments
- (b) Research that provides opportunities for innovative new applications and services to be built, Internet style, with the direct objective of creating new applications and services
